Our starter has been kept alive in Michael’s family for generations. Michael has cared for it himself since he was 19, after inheriting it from his Mother, who inherited it from her Mother before her. Strong, established and exceptionally reliable, it’s the same family starter we send out today.

Delivery

  • All orders receive free UK Delivery!
  • We use Evri, and ship most orders same or the next day (usually 11am cut-off)
  • On Fridays, we try to avoid posting so the starter is not sat in a warehouse all weekend

A note about live starter deliveries

Your starter is a living, fermenting culture and may expand during transit, occasionally causing a little leakage. Minor leakage does not necessarily mean the starter is damaged, and the starter remaining inside the jar may still be suitable for feeding and baking.

If there’s significant leakage, damaged packaging or any concern about its condition, please contact us with photos before using it so we can help. Your statutory rights are unaffected.

Passed down through generations of bakers, our family sourdough starter is nearly 100 years old. They’ll receive a portion of their own, dried and tucked up for the journey, ready to wake whenever they are.

There’s no feeding or maintenance needed until they begin, so you can order ahead, wrap the box and keep it for the occasion. Our revival instructions, feeding guide and first loaf recipe will walk them through those first steps, from waking their starter to baking something worth showing off.

Prefer something already bubbling? Live starter is available on request. It will need feeding or refrigerating shortly after delivery, so choose dried starter if the gift will stay wrapped for a while.
